NHS Retirement Fellowship – Cymru

Michael Brown

Director – NHSRF

Michael has been the Director of the NHSRF since late September 2006, and has now chaired the Welsh National Conference twice. His background is over 40 years in NHS management, for 15 years as a chief officer in hospitals in Manchester. Latterly he led a team sponsored by Macmillan Cancer Relief, that established quality standards for cancer care in primary care for the National Cancer Action Team. Michael believes passionately in the National Health Service and was pleased to remain associated through the Fellowship.

The Director’s early objective is to raise the profile of the Retirement Fellowship, which he is doing through articles in the professional journals, establishing contacts with the Health Department, all health organisations, and related voluntary bodies. Michael is working at raising more funds for the Fellowship, with the aim of establishing additional benefits for the membership. As well as grants from the Health Departments, the opportunity to accrue income from NHS staff contributions is being explored. An NHS Retirement Fellowship Lottery has recently been launched.

Michael believes that as the charity representing NHS retirees, we should have a major voice in influencing central policy on matters that are important to older people. Work is underway to write a Health & Social Care Manifesto for presentation to Central Government.

Given the ever changing world in which we live,  emphasis is being placed upon having a 10 year strategy for the Fellowship, which addresses how the organisation will strengthen membership, and remain a relevant and worthwhile organisation to join when retiring from NHS employment.

Above all, Michael is committed to maintaining an organisation where staff retiring from the NHS can maintain friendships, form new one’s, pursue a range of interests with like minded people and be supported in times of hardship.
